Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate markup on a trade quote?

Markup is calculated by adding materials, labor costs and fixed business costs (rent, utilities, insurance, tool depreciation), then applying your desired margin. Formula: Price = (Materials + Labor + Overhead) × (1 + Margin%). The calculator above does all of that automatically.

What margin should a tradesperson use?

Typical margins for trades in Italy range from 20% to 40%, depending on the sector. For specialized work or high-skill jobs, margins can go up to 50% or more. For standard work or highly competitive markets, margins drop to 15–20%. Use the calculator to see how the final price changes at different margin levels.

Should I include overhead costs?

Yes. Overhead (rent, utilities, insurance, accountant, tool depreciation) should always be included in the base cost. The calculator has a dedicated field. If you're not sure, a rule of thumb is 10–15% of material cost.
